Polymorphic and fascinating, one of the very beautiful ‘unidentified musical objects’ of the 2024.
While we were waiting for the traditional year-end Cadlag, Tensor, which has now been announced for early 2025, so very soon, the Slovenian Simon Šerc, member of the quartet and head of the Pharmafabrik label, takes us elsewhere with this solo release from the very end of December 2024, described as a ‘multi-dimensional exploration of perception, nature, and the passage of time.’
Experienced both in harsh noise and field recordings, sometimes even overindulging in the latter with projects leaning toward pure ‘sound recording’ in the style of the former Cabaret Voltaire, Chris Watson, the author of the anxiety-inducing CMBR, brilliantly combines here the full spectrum that separates these two extremes.
He transitions from a forest ambient where even the faintest bird chirp feels ominous to bursts of abrasive electronic frequencies (Paracusia, Tetragram), from an ethereal drone energized by deep bass to spoken word in Japanese over old-school techno (Tasukete), from jazzy post-rock percussive like Tortoise (Slumber) to maelstroms of magnetic textures and aquatic samples (Metatron), from cinematic electronica with a liquid groove evoking the great Funki Porcini (Keif) to cavernous dark ambient with tense pulses (Polynya).
Polymorphic and fascinating, one of the very beautiful ‘unidentified musical objects’ of this 2024 release.
